SPECIAL FEATURE South Australia in Focus

Feature editorial appeared in the February 2012 edition of The Australian Oil & Gas Review

FOUNDED in 1974, Kirkhope Aviation specialises in business and travel tours throughout outback Australia. For many years the company’s focus has been on specialised touring which has been very successful, including approximately 100 Lake Eyre tours over the past three years. Other tours the company offers include the Kimberley, Arnhem Land and the Gulf, as well as closer destinations such as Kangaroo Island and Flinders Island.

Over more recent years the business has expanded to include corporate and government work. To support this growth, the aircraft fleet has grown to three twin engine aircraft: a Piper Chieftain, a Piper Navajo and a recently purchased twin-turbine pressurised super KingAir.

The new KingAir, is a truly corporate aircraft in both comfort and speed, it was flown out from Florida in the US to Melbourne in April 2011. The journey took the aircraft and crew through Greenland, Iceland, Europe, India and Australia.

Kirkhope Aviation’s pilots are fully qualified and have many years of flying experience, including emergency medical transport with the RFDS. Kirkhope Aviation’s main focus is reliable, safe and comfortable travel. With the ability to accommodate up to 10 passengers in the company’s new KingAir aircraft, corporate business charter and remote mine site flying throughout Australia has never been easier.

Hi all, 2012 year is going quickly!. The last newsletter was in February but we thought it prudent to let you know the latest.

Lake Eyre trips:

We have scheduled about 13 trips spread out between now and August 2012. The first one that is happening is 18th April at this stage and it is fully booked.. The rain as you all know has been everywhere over the top end and over Queensland and NSW. For those of you who can access our facebook page we have put a link showing the state of Lake Eyre now compared to this time last year. It appears that the SW corner of Belt Bay is not quite as covered but the Madigan Gulf on the SE corner is already more covered than last year. Water is coming down the Warburton into the Lake and also there has been considerable local rain around Arkaroola and the Flinders Ranges meaning Lake Eyre South and Lake Frome are already covered. We believe that the Cooper Creek will once again flood into the Lake and hopefully rains in the north will continue to flood the Georgina and Eyre Creek that feed the Diamantina. Our Toyota has been serviced and will be returning to Muloorina Station soon to assist in the ground tours to the edge of the Lake.

Google the Lake Eyre Yacht club website and you will get more detail on the flooding of Lake Eyre. The actual site is http://www.lakeeyreyc.com/Status/latest.html#

Regardless of the extent of the rain, the scheduled trips to Lake Eyre will be stunning. We hope the scheduled trips start filling and as usual we can always add more if necessary

Lake Gairdner and the Gawler Ranges

We have scheduled a number of 4 day tours to Lake Gairdner in the Gawler Ranges which would include 2 nights at the terrific “Kangaluna” Bush camp, a visit to the huge salt lake of Lake Gairdner, a swim with the sea lions at Streaky Bay and a night on Kangaroo Island. We have had great feedback on these trips over previous years. See the comment posted on teh Facebook page from there previous clients. This is a great alternative for those who have done the three day Lake Eyre trip.

12 day Kimberley, Arnhem Land and the Gulf

Two 12 day Kimberley trips available at this stage…19th May and 30th June. We have two other committed Kimberley trips already. We have also committed to fly a number of Kimberley trips for other outback operators. places like Kimberley Coastal Camp, Faraway Bay, The Bungle Bungles, Mornington Wilderness and Davidson’s Safari Camp are still among our favorite destinations.

The new Kingair has just completed it’s first 200 hour maintenance and has come through with flying colours. Charters have been increasing and it is starting to become popular particularly for corporate and or mining type charters. Recently we did a trip that got some corporate people to Sydney by 7:30 am so that they could have a full day of work, then we were back in Melbourne by 8:30am the next day…for another full day of work at the home office. We also did a number of charters to Portland for the CFA when the “spill” occurred last month.Keith has just finished his endorsement and so we now have 3 extra pilots who will slowly gather their experience on this machine. Kirsty is still our main pilot and Peter Bishop , who flew out in the plane from the States, will assist as her backup.

We have started doing outback flights for Australian Air Holidays and also Air Adventure Australia. At this stage most of these trips have been around Tasmanina including King Island and Flinders Island. If all of these proposed tours fill up , by the time we also continue conducting our own Kirkhope Aviation tours , we will possibly need some more pilots and aircraft. This might mean some new faces around the place.

Hi all, well the 2012 year has started!. We hope you all had a great break over Xmas/New Year. This newsletter is just a brief update on some of our plans/activities for the year.

Hail damage

As you are aware there was a massive hail storm on Xmas day. We were very lucky at Moorabbin as all our aircraft escaped any damage. Unfortuantely quite a few operators at Essendon and Tullamarine were not so lucky.

The year 2012:

Lake Eyre trips:

We have scheduled about 15 or so at this stage. We are still not sure what the water situation will be, but the top end and centre are still getting rainfalls and of course parts of NSW are currently experiencing major flooding, however hopefully without the devastating outcomes that happened last year in Qld. Interestingly Eulo, a small township in SW Queensland last week received a 1 in 100 year flood and this water will flow down into the Darling system. Lake Eyre water inflows come from further west and we have just heard that the Thompson and Diamantina rivers are flooding, so certainly the upper reaches of the Lake Eyre basin are receiving rain. Regardless of the extent of the rain, we still believe the scheduled trips to Lake Eyre will be stunning. The first trip is 10th March and is available.

Peter Elfes has spent three years photographing Lake Eyre. His exhibition is at the Palm House , Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens and the Customs House in Sydney between Feb 1 and the end of May. They are stunning photos.

We continue to do corporate and private charters in all our aircraft as the fleet allows us to select the most appropriate one for the job. We are doing a number of the Australian Air Holidays tours as advertised in the Escape section of the Age. We hope to obtain some of the work in the mining boom ….transporting between Victoria and outback back sites. If you have any contacts in this area we would appreciate the assistance.

This was for a property developer and his team of consultants. They have bought coastal land on the north west tip of the island at Cape Wickham and construction has just started on a golf course and accommodation. It would have to rank with the best in the world in terms of coastal views and will be interesting to see how the course design “shapes” up! Obviously will need to fly in and they are then planning helicopter transfers from the airport to the course

Hi all,

The 2011 year is almost over and we are all one year older!. We just would like to wish you all a happy Christmas and successful New Year and to also update you with a brief commentary for 2011 and our plans for 2012.

The year 2011:

Lake Eyre trips:For those of you who went to Lake Eyre this year we did 33 trips, with only one cancelled due aircraft availability. This makes a total of about 100 trips overs the last 3 seasons. Quite remarkable and from the feedback all enjoyed it. (see the many testimonials on the new website). Cyclone Yasi finished up as a rain depression with significant rain between Alice Springs and Lake Eyre and for the third year in a row Lake Eyre had significant water in it. The Cooper Creek flowed into the Lake for the second year running and the South Lake also had early water from local rain, however this had evaporated by mid-season. We discovered a rockery of approx. 500 pelicans just west of Coongie Lakes and it proved a highlight when it was smooth enough to go down low. The Dig Tree strip, was under water for months in the early part of the season and then needed repairs at the south west end, so we didn’t land there this year. Muloorina has been a highlight again and on most days, we had lunch out at the edge of the Lake and it was a great experience for all concerned, including the pilots! As an alternative to Muloorina we did a number of boat tours on the Cooper just upstream from the Birdsville track. This was also a wonderful experience with Peter’s “yarns” as well as seeing up close the diversity of bird life. We did a number of helicopter transfers to the Cooper Creek from Etadunna Station which also were a highlight. Our new aircraft:We purchased a new Super Kingair B200 turbine pressurised aircraft this year. We flew it out from Florida via Greenland, Iceland and Europe in March…quite an experience. It was used a few times on Lake Eyre tours this year and was very successful. Other flights included an 8 day Kimberley trip. This was a stunning trip going to places like Kimberley Coastal Camp, Faraway Bay, Mornington wilderness and the Bungle Bungles in only 8 days. Whilst it will continue to be used for some touring, it’s main use will be for corporate/government charter and if anyone has any contacts in this area, we would be pleased to pass on some information. Word of mouth seems to be the best way of promotion .

New Website and Facebook:We have created a new website. kirkhope aviation website .It is the same name/url as before. We think it is more modern and hopefully easier to use. It will also have connections to those social pages like Facebook , Linkedin and Google+. We just need to learn how to use these new links, however we anticipate that particularly for any Facebook users this will be a timely way of getting the latest information/trip specials out there. If you have any comments on the site we would be pleased to hear them.So we’re now on Facebook – click on the link at the top of the website to visit our new page and then don’t forget to click on the ‘Like’ button at the top of the facebook page…………….or …Join us on Facebook .LinkedIn is also a button on the top corner of our website…or….Join us on Linkedin

Other charters:

We did quite a few charters for other organisations including the State government, the AFL , many corporate businesses and some international clients. All these were successful and we hope this continues.

The year 2012

We are planning more Lake Eyre Basin trips next year. We have scheduled multiple trips from March to July at this stage and expect that they will go ahead even if we don’t get massive rains up north again. Over the past 3 years, these 3 day trips have been very successful and a great introduction to the diversity of the outback, regardless of the level of water in Lake Eyre.

We are very keen to promote 4 day tours to Lake Gairdner in the Gawler Ranges which would include 2 nights at the terrific “Kangaluna” Bush camp, a visit to the huge salt Lake of Lake Gairdner, a swim with the sea lions at Streaky Bay and a night on Kangaroo Island. We have had great feedback on these trips over previous years. One of these has been scheduled for Easter and we will arrange more. This is a great alternative for those who have done the three day Lake Eyre trip.

We intend to schedule at least two 12 day Kimberley trips, most likely in May and July, however most of the larger trips will be arranged on demand.

Check the website for dates of scheduled trips see http://kirkhopeaviation.com.au/holiday-tours/future-air-tour-dates

It’s also possible to check specific tour pages like the Lake Eyre page for detailed dates etc …see http://kirkhopeaviation.com.au/holiday-tours/lake-eyre-tours

It is starting to get too hot. The Lake is still well covered from recent influx from the Cooper Creek and so assuming the wet season is significant again Lake Eyre 2012 will be another stunning event.

Keep an eye on the news page or the “Lake Eyre “page of the website as the tour dates will be posted soon. We will probably stick to the same 3 day itinerary as 2011. We have put some 2 day trips this time in the faster KingAir aircraft. Our clients were extremely satisfied this year…have a look at some of the testimonials.

Go to our Lake Eyre tour page for details

We have scheduled another trip departing 7th Sept…see the website. This trip is still at the current price of $2995pp twin share

October trips 8th,15,21st and 29th…itinerary change:

We will modify the trip slightly as indicated below:

1. We will still go to Innamincka, overnight Birdsville and 2nd night Arkaroola as per all our current trips this year.

2. The Birdsville Museum will be closed after 20th Sept so we will depart Birdsville at around 8am rather than 9:45 am to get the better “low level” flight down along the spectacular Goyder Lagoon and Diamantina area. This should reduce the chance of bumpy flying at low level.

3. We will land for a boat cruise on the Cooper Creek near the Birdsville Track crossing rather than going to Muloorina Station and driving to the edge of the Lake for lunch (very hot). We would land at Ettadunna Station and drive 50 minutes to the Cooper Creek for the cruise. Should be considerable birdlife on the Cooper. Then after lunch we suggest a helicopter flight back to Ettadunna Station airstrip….this would be more comfortable than a second drive in the vehicle.

4. Then after the cruise we flydown the Cooper Creek, over the Lake and onto Marree for fuel before landing at Balcanoona (our 2nd night at Arkaroola as per the other trips). This may be a little bumpy depending on the day. The third day will be as usual…a 4 hr 4wd tour of the famous Flinders Ranges ridgetops.

So the main change is missing the Birdsville museum and Muloorina Station and including a boat cruise on the Cooper Creek instead.
We are recommending the helicopter transfer one way at Ettadunna and will have to charge $100 pp for this. We strongly believe it is worth it ( 15 mins in the chopper rather than more driving in the heat)

If you are still keen for an October tour, and happy with the price of $3095 pp twin share, please fill out the booking confirmation form from the contacts page of the website.

We will then send an invoice for 10% deposit to confirm your position. A detailed itinerary will follow once we have the aircraft and passengers finalised.

Regards
Tony and Keith

Lake Eyre Stunning in May

Just an update re our Lake Eyre trips, the beauty of which you have shared with us over the past couple of years. With the early 2011 rains the region has developed even more maturity in terms of the vegetation and as well as the Lake itself, Goyder Lagoon and the Coongie Lakes are continuing to look stunning. This year has also seen a return of bird life, with a rookery of approx. 500 pelicans north west of Innamincka. Have added to the gallery a few of Pam’s photos from our last trip, as an example of what the country currently looks like.

Have got some Lake Eyre trips booked throughout 2011 that are only partially full, so if you know of anybody who hasn’t yet seen this part of the country maybe now is the time, as we are expecting the weather cycle to progressively move back to a more “normal” rainfall.

Would be prepared to offer a discount to fill the available seats to friends and relatives of past clients, so please pass this offer on. More information can be found at www.kirkhopeaviation.com.au

Please give us a ring if you would like more information.

If you would like to be removed from any future email correspondence, please let us know.

Regards – Tony & Keith

We have just returned from the first trip up to see Lake Eyre and the floods throughout the Lake Eyre Basin.

<img class="alignleft" title="" src="/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/schemja_lake-eyre1.jpg" alt="Lake Eyre"width="262" height="131" data-mce-height="40" data-mce-width="80" />Thought that we would send an update as you had expressed interest in these tours.

Basically there is a huge expanse of water. At Innamincka the Cooper Creek is flowing at 5 meters above the causeway, with more water on the way following 16 ins of rain at Windorah. The Coongie Lakes are stunning with reasonable birdlife, Birdsville is surrounded by water with the Diamantina in flood and water is flowing south in the Eyre Creek, also following 16 ins of rain at Bedourie. Goyder Lagoon is in flood, Lake Eyre has 75% coverage and that is without the water further north that will take some months to arrive. The vegetation is lush green and have attached an aerial photo of the Diamantina River at Birdsville taken 2 days ago, to give a perspective of the amount of water.

At present a big issue is supplies, particularly fuel and also availability of some airstrips, however we will handle this on an individual trip by trip basis as required (the same as last year). Birdsville is expecting the roads to open shortly and so this is positive.

The issue of fuel pricing is also of concern with rises over the past two months. As a consequence we have reluctantly had to make the three day tour $2,995 / head, covering all flying, accommodation, meals and tours. Our aim is to fix this price for the season, unless there is a dramatic change in fuel costs.

Some of you have already booked and others who are interested in proceeding should check the dates on the website and send a booking confirmation form.

Please let us know if you are interested.

Regards

Tour Dates for 2011

We have listed some potential dates on the website for future tours this year. We are still not sure about the water level for Lake Eyre trips but have reserved accommodation for the below dates just in case. These three day trips will be as per last year and overnight at Birdsville and Arkaroola. This tour was considered as one of the best people have done and so we thought we should continue it. The price is not in concrete yet as we are waiting to see what happens re fuel prices but it should be around $2900 pp incl GST.

For those that have been on the Lake Eyre trip , maybe you might consider the Gawler Ranges option. This is a stunning location and the Gairdner salt Lake is superb.

Obviously we will do the other “larger” centre, Kimberley and Gulf trips based on demand so please let us know preferred dates if interested.

Please use the inquiry form on the contacts page of the website to express your interest on any tour.

2010 Activities in Review

We had a successful year again due to the “big wet” in the centre. Many of you experienced a “trip of a lifetime” flying on the three day trip over the wet centre and Lake Eyre.

We did 37 trips and all were successful albeit some last minute changes due to abnormal weather. Only 2 tours were cancelled due to extreme weather and we hope those that missed out might try again next year.

While most of the flying was to the Lake Eyre region, we also toured to Mallacoota, Mungo National Park, Lake Gairdner, Gawler Ranges, Flinders Island, northern Tasmania and King Island.

Quite a few corporate charters were completed including local businesses and government.

Activities for 2011

We are in the process of upgrading our fleet to include a twin engine turbine KingAir aircraft. This will appeal more to the corporate sector for business charters but will also be capable of doing outback tours, albeit at a slightly higher cost. Once this aircraft arrives you will see it on either of the websites www.kirkhopeaviation.com.au and www.moorabbinaircharters.com.au. It will fly faster than the Chieftain and Navajo and as it is pressurised will also go much higher above the weather. For that reason it is more suited to corporate work rather than outback sightseeing. If you know any companies that may be interested in corporate charters please let us know.

We expect Lake Eyre trips to continue again next year although the actual format will depend on the amount of rain again. The medium term weather forecasts indicate a probably of a wetter than normal northern summer and so depending on what eventuates, we will probably decide these in March and most likely will be 3 day trips.

We have listed below some ideas for you to think about as yet we have not scheduled any tours. Apart from Lake Eyre we are encouraging anyone who would like to see the salt lake “Lake Gaidner” and the Gawler Ranges to consider the 3 or 4 day trip which would include Kangaroo Island, sea lions and or Arkaroola. The bush safari camp at Kangaluna in the Gawler Ranges west of Adelaide is stunning and very comfortable.

We’re looking at scheduling the following activities:

Jan…..March The hot months……..suggest tours to King Island, Flinders Island and or the northern parts of Tasmania…suggest 2 to 4 days.

March….May……Suggest tours to Kangaroo Island, Gawler Ranges and Lake Gairdner…..swim with the sea lions. These would be 3 or 4 days.

April ……Sept….Suggest these will be the Lake Eyre months….earlier or later gets a little hot and bumpy for the low level flights.

Jun …… Sept…..These would be the best months to do the larger trips as per the website…places such as Pilbara, Kimberley and the Gulf.

Expressions of interest from anyone would be appreciated and as soon as we determine a schedule we will email and post it on the website.

Have a great Christmas and Happy New Year and hope to see you in the aircraft again next year.

Cheers… Tony and Keith
