Sweers Island

Although famous for its fishing, Sweers Island has much more to offer. Located in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, it features great food, sandy beaches, bird watching, bushwalking, and boating. You can choose to fish from a charter boat or take a ‘tinnie’ out into the deep blue for your own adventure. Alternatively, why not take a cultural tour of the island to discover its fascinating history? Accommodation is in share cabins in a resort only three-minutes drive from the landing strip. All meals are in the open-air restaurant bar.

Coconut Island/Poruma

Poruma Island is located between Australia’s tip of Cape York and Papua New Guinea within the Torres Strait Archipelago. The Island is home to 180 people, who welcome guests to experience their traditional fishing methods, impressive seafood cuisine, and to learn island history and crafts. The fishing around Poruma Island is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. An underwater maze of gin-clear channels, sand flats, reefs, and bomboras are home to Spanish mackerel, sailfish, marlin, trevally, coral trout, rays, sharks, dugongs, jewfish and much more. Great upmarket cabins are situated right on the beach.

Horn and Thursday Islands

Thursday Island is the most developed island in the Torres Strait Islands group. Located north of Australia’s Cape York Peninsula, Thursday Island offers tourists an inviting glimpse into a lovely cultural mosaic.

Horn Island, with an area of 53 square km, consists mainly of vacant Crown land. The aerodrome occupies six square km and, until recently, a gold mine operated on the eastern side of the island.

Lotus Bird Lodge – Cape York

Lotusbird Lodge is located 480 kilometres north of Cairns on the western boundary of Lakefield National Park in central-eastern Cape York. Lotusbird Lodge comprises ten individual pole-style cabins set amongst shady eucalypts along the inner bank of a large horseshoe-shaped billabong. The lodge was named after the Jacana (Lotus birds) that inhabit the billabong, and while not a dedicated bird watcher's lodge, the bird watching is exquisite.

Jowalbinna

Jowalbinna is an inspiring place located 350 km, or five hours drive, north of Cairns. Amazing rock art, a healthy natural environment, fun activities, and comfortable bush safari-style tented accommodation make for a truly memorable tropical North Queensland experience. The area was home to noted Australian pilot, painter, writer, explorer, and Aboriginal rock art historian, the late Percy Tresize. Percy’s son Steve now acts as a local tour guide.

Chillagoe

Located 140 km west of Mareeba, the limestone caves of Chillagoe have kept people fascinated for decades. The caves formed from the remains of coral that once lived in a sea that covered this in-land area, about 450 million years ago. There are no other places in tropical North Queensland that offer this kind of caving treat.

Weipa

Weipa is approximately 804 km north west of Cairns and can be reached by the Peninsula Development Road or by the QantasLink daily service from Cairns. It is a small town of around 3500 people, and the site of the world’s largest bauxite mine, operated by Comalco Mining & Refining. Great fishing can be arranged on Cape York.

Eulo

Eulo is a small town that captures the spirit and atmosphere of Queensland’s outback. Once the bustling main centre for opal miners, the area was chosen for settlement due to its proximity to a good waterhole on the Paroo River. Enjoy a visit to Ian and Nan’s Date Wine Farm, and then a great ‘outback sausage’ at the Eulo Queen hotel.

Noccundra

Established in 1882, the historic Noccundra Hotel is the only occupied building in the town and well worth a visit. Also, the site of a memorial to the ill-fated Hume expedition, it tells the fascinating story of explorer Hamilton Hume, who died of thirst west of the town while searching for survivors of the lost Leichardt expedition. The airstrip is only 50 m from the hotel.

Boulia

Boulia is located 300 km south of Mount Isa at the junction of the Diamantina and Kennedy Development Roads. The town’s fame largely rests with its association to the Min Min Light, a strange spectral light that can appear, hover, disappear and reappear with an eerie will of its own. Most often described as a hovering luminescent ball, the light has teased travellers for years, as it never gets close enough to be clearly examined. In fact, scientists still can’t explain the phenomenon.

Dick Suter, or ‘Dinosaur Dick’ as he was known, created an amazing collection of bones and moon rocks dug up from around this area. They are displayed in the old Stone House Museum.

Carnarvon Gorge

Carnarvon Gorge is located in the Southern Brigalow Belt bio-region in central Queensland, 593 km northwest of Brisbane. Primarily created by water erosion, the limestone gorge is around 30 km long and, at its mouth, 600 m deep. It is the most visited feature within Carnarvon National Park due to the diversity of experiences it contains and the ease with which it can be accessed.

Lawn Hill - Boodjamulla National Park

Boodjamulla National Park, formerly known as Lawn Hill National Park, is a national park in the Gulf Country region of north-west Queensland, 340 km north-west of Mount Isa. The main attractions in the park are the sandstone ranges with deep gorges and a limestone plateau with significant fossil fields at nearby Riversleigh. Other attractions include crystal-clear green waters, lush vegetation, plus canoeing and swimming. Surrounding the park are numerous resources reserves, set aside for future mineral exploration and mining if deposits are found.
