Lake Eyre is officially known as Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre, contains the lowest natural point in Australia, at approximately 15 m below sea level, and, on the rare occasions that it fills, is the largest salt lake in Australia and the world’s 13th largest lake, and is located in Northern South Australia. It’s drainage basin, of 1 140 000 square kilometres, covers 15% of the continent extending into the south-east of the Northern Territory and south west and central Queensland.

Lake Eyre North is the lowest point at 15.2 metres below sea level and Lake Eyre South has a maximum depth of 3.7 metres. The two Lakes are joined by the 15km long Goyder Channel. Both lakes have a combined area of 9690 square kilometres. There is some great history on Lake Eyre here.

Our tours vary in length from 1 and two days to 3 or the tour can be extended to one of our 3 or 4 day air tours which include Birdsville and the Flinders Ranges. Lake Eyre has seen some water this year making it timely to visit this magnificent area.

The Lake has been an important site for Aboriginal people for several thousand years and they continue to consider the lake an important cultural site and are involved in its management today.

in 1985 the Lake Eyre National Park was established. In 1967 Elliot Price of Muloorina Station donated the Elliot Price Conservation Area which is inaccessible to the public.

Taste of the Outback  Flights from Melbourne

The 1 day tour captures the beauty of this region. Lake Eyre is a stunning sight regardless of water.

Flying in our Corporate Super King Air aircraft, this popular 1 day air tour would depart Moorabbin Airport around 8:00 am. You’ll spend a full day at Lake Eyre, arriving at Moorabbin around 6pm.

The 2 day Tour can be in the Piper Chieftain aircraft (6 passengers minimum) or the Super King Air aircraft (8 passengers minimum). It is similar to our one day tour plus a 4WD to the lake (road and weather permitting) and an overnight stay at the famous William Creek Hotel. The 3 day tour has been so successful over past years and we’ve continued with this series of tours to our rich Australian Outback. Board your Chieftain aircraft and depart Moorabbin at 8am as you start your three day Outback adventure to Birdsville, Lake Eyre and Arkaroola in the Flinders Ranges.

Our extended 4 day trip is similar, but adds the majestic Lake Mungo and Broken Hill, coming back to Melbourne through Parachilna and the central Flinders Ranges.
