Birdsville & Channel Country River Flight
Following the great enjoyment and fantastic viewing of the flood waters in north western Queensland by our 9 passengers that have just returned (Thursday 28 February), Kirkhope Aviation is delighted to put on another tour, departing next Wednesday 06 March.
Following the destructive floods that enveloped north western Queensland in recent weeks, a vast amount of drought relief water is gushing down the Diamantina River and other channels towards Lake Eyre in South Australia. Reports from Birdsville say that the water level there is close to the 9 metre mark which filled Lake Eyre back in 1974.
As you may have seen in news reports the water movement down the Diamantina River is a sight to behold and Kirkhope Aviation is planning to operate a very special 2-day flightseeing expedition, to survey Birdsville and this extraordinary event that is currently unfolding.
Departing next Wednesday 06 March 2019
Day 1: (L,D) Moorabbin – Tibooburra- Windorah – Birdsville
Departing Moorabbin at 8.00am (Check in 7.15am) in our well-appointed Piper Chieftain, where every seat is a window seat, we fly to Tibooburra in far North-western NSW and pause for lunch at its quaint 1882 family run pub. From Tibooburra we track north along the Coopers Creek which has experienced significant water flow, to Windorah. From Windorah we head west, north of Birdsville , then track south following the Diamantina River to Birdsville. A beer, dinner and overnight at the iconic Birdsville Hotel.
Day 2: (B,L) Birdsville – Goyder Lagoon – Broken Hill – Moorabbin
Following breakfast at the pub, we take to the skies again and track down the Diamantina River to the spectacular Goyder Lagoon - the massive ephemeral swamp where the water passes on route to Lake Eyre. As the water has not yet reached Lake Eyre we track south east to Broken Hill where we enjoy lunch together, share photos of the expedition and tales of the aerial visual feast just witnessed. From Broken Hill it is back to Moorabbin landing at approximately 6.00pm.
This one off tour is certain to be, visual, insightful and a bit of an adventure. We would be delighted if you can join us. As we are limited to 7- 8 passengers and it departs Wednesday 06 March, please book now to avoid disappointment.
