We thoroughly enjoyed this experience - the amazing sights, the remote places, the resilient people and the wonderful pilot who guided us through it all.
Itinerary: Opera, Outback & Opals (4 days)
Day 1: Melbourne to Coober Pedy (L,D)
Set off from Moorabbin airport in our Beechcraft Super King Air 200, a luxurious twin-engine turboprop with comfortable leather seats and room to stretch out. Travel across Victoria and South Australia to the quirky opal-mining town of Coober Pedy. Known for underground living, opals and spectacular sunsets over the Breakaways, Coober Pedy is unlike anywhere else.
A local expert will take you on a tour of the Coober Pedy cemetery to hear stories about the colourful and sometimes eccentric people who helped to shape the town of today. A glass of sparkling and some delicious cheese in hand, revel in the expanse of the desert as the sun slowly settles on the horizon of the Breakaways and Stuart Ranges. You’re truly in the outback now! Photo opportunities abound in the beautiful Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, a significant site for the Antakirinja Matuntjara Yankunytjatjara people, whose name for the area is Umoona, meaning long life.
Return to your hotel for dinner in the best restaurant in town – Umbertos – before retiring to the quietest bedroom you have ever experienced – underground.
Overnight: Desert Cave Hotel, underground room
The 3 day trip , Taste Of The Outback may sound short, but we packed a lot in. We visited a million acre cattle station, which was an eyeopener and then got to Arkaroola in the Flinders Ranges and explored there by 4 WD.
